The beginning of a new year is a great time for church offices and altar guilds to look at all their church supplies for the coming year. While you might check on certain items before specific holidays or events, now is an ideal time to look over the supplies you use week in and week out. Read through this post for ideas and then use our downloadable worksheet to make sure you have everything you need for 2018.
Once Christmas has concluded, it’s a good idea to look at your candle supply overall. Are there any handheld candles that are broken or have burned too low to reuse? How many are left for next year, and how many will you need to reorder? By taking time to inventory your special candles now, you’ll have one less item on your to-do list during busier times of the year.
Check your special candle supply for other occasions too, like weddings or Baptisms. Even if you have enough on hand, it doesn’t hurt to take a few minutes to inspect your supply to see if the candles are in good condition.
Speaking of inspections, don’t forget to double-check your candlelighters to see how much wear and tear they have been through during the past year. If cleaning or repair is necessary, the period between Christmas and Lent is a great time to take care of this. Count tapers and reorder them if necessary. Also, check on your acolyte robes to make sure they are all clean and in good condition.
Bulletins & Certificates
While you probably have weekly bulletin supplies on hand already, now is a great time to check on your supply of special-occasion bulletins. Do you have enough wedding bulletin samples for couples to look through? How is your funeral bulletin supply? Since these events don’t occur at predefined times, it’s best to make sure you’re prepared whenever they happen. If you haven’t already, request a bulletin sample pack to keep on hand for the coming year.
Similarly, check on your supply of Baptism, confirmation, and marriage certificates. Try to estimate how many new members your church may gain this year, and order any certificates or other materials they should receive when they join.
Envelopes & Pew Supplies
Make sure your attendance books are still in good shape, and order replacement pads for books that are running out of pages. Remove any pew envelopes, attendance cards, or Communion cards that are damaged or have notes or scribbles.
Finally, take a walk-through down all the pews and check on the holders for pew supplies and pencils. Make note of any that need to be repaired or replaced. Look at the pew pencils as well, and sharpen dull ones and replace ones that have gotten too small.
